But this is one trip that I wish I had stored in the archives and I could pull out this post for a weekend and look at.
We went to visit Bigbad's cousins in early 2007 (OMG that was way too long ago) to visit their firstborn. He was one month old at the time. (OMG. That kid is in school now).
Having never been to D.C. I was pretty dang excited, the I-want-to-drink-in-the-whole-world kind of excited. I wanted to see the entire city. Marmie had even given me a map of Art in D.C. I had circled no less than a dozen places that I wanted to see. I was ridiculously eager.
So the fact that it was February and freakishly cold was not going to stop me from going out and at least seeing some of those circled spots. We went to the Mall (which gets this stuck in my head). Back to solemnity, we visited the National Mall and spent a bit of time at the Vietnam Memorial and Lincoln Memorial.
I remember a few really cool moments. The Bigbad fam was walking along and two very low flying helicopters came overhead. One landed on the White House lawn. We were walking and missed witnessing President Bush get out, but it was still such a thrilling moment with your heart drumming away in your chest matching the beat of the propellers.
I can't recall which museum was closed although much calamnity and sadness was proclaimed. First trip to D.C., ruined! Of course not, I had oodles of circles on my map. We ate one of the most overpriced lunches on the planet at one of the Smithsonians and then wandered across to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
The sculpture garden may have been one of my favorite parts of the entire trip (possibly because it wasn't crowded-- I don't do well in crowds). In contrast to the Lincoln memorial where I took just two pictures, I took at least 14 photographs in the garden. Apparently, I liked this place.
I hope I get the chance to go back. Bigbad has some opportunities that might have him traveling to Washington D.C., so my fingers are crossed that I can visit again. Maybe when it isn't so freakin' cold.
I link up to these parties.

Ive never been to DC, but its on my 30 before 30 list (and that will roll into my 31 before 31 list!) there was a sculpture park in St. Louis that I just loved.
Heehee, at the Nashville blogger meetup on Tuesday, we were all lamenting the sad content of our college era LJs. Sounds like you were much smarter than us! It looks like this was a good trip. I visited DC in 8th grade, but don't remember much. Maybe it's time to go back.
Also? I can't stop giggling over that sculpture's, um, powerful physique! :D
I have some family nearby, as the post points out, so I've been visiting DC regularly since I was a kid. It was not until highschool, when my sister and I were taking an exchange student on a tour of the area, that it kind of clicked. When Maja says in broken English, heavy with her Macedonian accent, "Oh my GOD! I just cannot believe that I'm...I'm in DC!" I realized that a place can have power, and I am glad that I have been able to appreciate its gravity.
Roadtrip!
Any time--say the word.
@Jen. Oh LJ! Haha. Since your message, I clicked over to read my old LJ (didn't realize I kept up with it as much as I did). I don't even understand who/what I'm talking about. Thinking this blog should be a trip to read in another 5 years.
Best line from my LJ: "boys are so oblivious sometimes."
Off to delete. Because yikes.
